NEWS | Rules Codification

We have joined Bluesky (@bsky.app), and are looking forward to meeting new Rithmomachia players.  Feel free to follow us at;  @rithmomachia.bsky.social

For those individuals who have used the rules followed by the Club Venezolano de Rithmomachia” or other clubs, we would like to hear from you.  Also, we would like to thank Dr.Tomás Guardia of Gonzaga University.   He has generously taken time to share documentation relating to rules that have been tested in multiple  tournaments.

We will continue to work with individuals internationally to establish, and promote a standard set of rules.  For the past several years we have been promoting the rules outlined in “Rithmomachia: An Academic Proposal of Rules” by Rié Durnil and Dr.Tomás Guardia.  An English PDF can be accessed from this site.

Tournaments and Boards

Rithmomachia Canada is planning to promote tournaments in Canada and in Argentina.   We are also in the process of creating various board designs for sale.

History of Rithmomachia

By the late 1600’s the game of Rithmomachia lost popularity across Europe.

Originally created as a teaching aid for monastery schools in the 11th century, the game has had a very interesting history.  It has been referenced over the years by such people as John of Salisbury (see quote), Roger Bacon (Communia mathematica), and Sir Thomas More (Utopia).

We will endeavour to provide links to interesting articles and videos on the history of Rithmomachia on a regular basis. Here is an example from the “Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies”;  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaKDTiqxp1s&ab_channel=SchoenbergInstitute    A page by page view can be found here.  For those players who speak French;
